New National Laws to protect Workers from Silica risk
Published on Posted onNew national laws have taken effect that give workers the right to demand multiple safety control measures, such as PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), water suppression, on – tool extraction systems and exhaust ventilation systems. Workers can now also demand a silica risk control plan from their employer in high-risk environments.
These laws follow the landmark decision in a national ban on the use, supply and manufacture of engineered stone. Taking place from July 2024, the ban is an effort to reduce the exposure of Australian workers to Silica Dust, as an estimated 600,00 Australians are exposed to Silica Dust each year.
While this is another step forward into ensuring that our workers are protected on job sites, Silica Dust is still present on a large number of worksites across the nation.
Silicosis and its effects
If you aren’t aware of the devastating effects of Silica Dust, inhaling this substance can directly lead to Silicosis. A permanent and progressive lung disease. Respirable Crystalline Silica is a natural mineral found in the following materials:
- Sand
- Stone
- Mortar
- Clay
- Marble
- Concrete
- Slate
- Granite
When these materials are worked on (i.e. via sawing, polishing, drilling, cutting etc) silica is released as a fine dust into the air.
Inhaling these particles can scar the lungs and lead to problems such as:
- Silicosis
- Progressive Massive Fibrosis (PMF)
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Lung Cancer
- Kidney disease
- Autoimmune conditions
Some symptoms of Silicosis include:
- Shortness of breath
- Chest Pain
- Persistent Cough
- Fatigue
- Leg Swelling
- Bluish Discoloration of the lips
